Uttarayan and Devayan Significance in Vedic Culture - ARUN SINGHA
Uttarayan and Dakshinayan describe the Sun's apparent six-month northward and southward journeys across the sky, caused by Earth's \(23.5^{\circ }\) axial tilt.
Uttarayan brings longer days and summer warmth, while Dakshinayan brings longer nights and winter conditions.
The Two Phases
  • Uttarayan (Northward Movement): Begins around December 21 (Winter Solstice) when the Sun starts its apparent journey north from the Tropic of Capricorn.
  •  It crosses the celestial equator and culminates at the Tropic of Cancer around June 21.
  • Dakshinayan (Southward Movement): Begins around June 21 (Summer Solstice) when the Sun reaches its northernmost limit and begins moving south.
  • It crosses the equator and reaches its southernmost limit at the Tropic of Capricorn around December 22.

  • While astronomical Uttarayan aligns directly with the winter solstice (Dec 21), the traditional Indian calendar (which factors in the precession of the equinoxes) celebrates the Sun's entry into the Capricorn zodiac around January 14 (Makar Sankranti)

    • Niruthi Lingam (Southwest): Governed by Niruthi, it represents the dissolution of ego and is said to help devotees release past karma and emotional blocks.
