Major rivers in India that flow from west to east, emptying into the Bay of Bengal, include the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri.
These rivers generally rise in the Western Ghats or Himalayan ranges and traverse the peninsula, forming large fertile deltas and covering about 77% of India's drainage area.

West-flowing rivers in India, primarily located in the Peninsular region, flow into the Arabian Sea rather than the Bay of Bengal, forming estuaries instead of deltas due to their steep paths.
Major rivers include the Narmada, Tapi, Sabarmati, Mahi, and Luni, with many smaller streams emerging from the Western Ghats
Rivers in India that do not reach the sea are primarily "inland drainage" systems located in the arid regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The most prominent example is the Luni River, which originates in the Aravalli Range and disappears into the marshes of the Rann of Kutch.
Others include the seasonal Ghaggar, Banas, and Rupnarain rivers, which dry up in the sandy soils of the Thar Desert
  • Luni River: Starts in the Pushkar valley (Ajmer), flows through the Thar Desert, and ends in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat.
  • Ghaggar River: Originates in the Shivalik Hills, flows through Haryana and Punjab, and vanishes into the sandy desert of Rajasthan.
  • Banas River (West): Flows through Gujarat's Banaskantha district but does not reach the sea.
  • Rupnarain and Medha: Other streams in Rajasthan, often considered inland, that terminate in land
  • Causes for Failure to Reach the Sea:
    • Endorheic Basin: These rivers flow into closed basins that do not drain into any ocean.
    • Arid Environment: Low rainfall, high evaporation rates, and high temperatures mean that the water dries up quickly.
    • Sandy Terrain: The sandy, porous soil of the desert causes the water to disappear into the ground.
    • Seasonal Nature: These rivers only flow significantly during the monsoon season.
